A photographer couple sought a comfortable retreat in Warsaw for their occasional visits, finding their ideal compact apartment in Port Praski, an area undergoing significant transformation from an industrial dock into a lively mixed-use district. Despite its recent construction, they desired a complete overhaul of the interior layout and design, leading them to engage local architect Dawid Konieczny. Konieczny undertook a comprehensive renovation, beginning with the electrical and plumbing systems, and innovatively repositioning the bedroom into the kitchen's former space, thereby creating a combined living and dining area from the remaining footprint.
The essence of the redesign was to optimize every inch of the compact dwelling, even if it meant embracing unconventional arrangements. Following the renovation, the entrance now features bespoke built-in storage and opens diagonally into a fan-shaped living space. The kitchen, now condensed to a single wall, offers expanded counter space, ample overhead cabinetry, and an adjoining dining nook. The bedroom has been established as a distinct zone, also benefiting from customized storage solutions, and despite the relocation of the shower and toilet, the bathroom now functions with greater efficiency.
Warm hues and soft, rounded edges define the revitalized interior. Notable elements include the oatmeal-colored lacquered built-in units framing the entryway and the intimate, peachy-toned bedroom, reminiscent of a ship's cabin. The flooring, ceilings, and walls are uniformly finished in off-white polished concrete, while the large, floor-to-ceiling storage in the bedroom incorporates glass panels with curved corners. The kitchen's built-ins showcase curved detailing where oiled oak veneer meets cream lacquer, complemented by Blue Roma quartzite with brown veining that harmonizes with the cabinetry, introducing a cool contrast to the otherwise warm palette of the main living area. The bathroom stands out as a favorite, blending Alpi California burl wood veneer (also present in the bedroom), an Art Deco checkerboard floor, and a rustic handmade ceramic vase, infusing the space with eclectic vintage charm. Throughout the apartment, thoughtfully chosen vintage pieces, like a brass artwork from a Belarusian flea market above the dining bench, add a sense of history and unique personality to this distinctly modern residence.
This thoughtful transformation of a compact apartment serves as a testament to the power of innovative design and meticulous planning.
